2009 Postcard #25: Newburgh City Club

The Newburgh City Club is located at Grand Street and Second Street. Presently it is a shell, having been gutted by a suspicious fire in the the early 1980's preceding an investigation involving a group that was raising money to restore the Dutch Reformed Church and was using the City Club building for offices. The building was designed by Andrew Jackson Downing and Calvert Vaux and built in the 1850's originally as a residence for Dr. William Culbert. In 1906 it became the City Club. This is an image from just after that period. Note the period car on the left and the street lamp on the upper right.
