This image is taken from the program for the 100th Anniversary of the Newburgh Fire Department in 1897. Even though none of these buildings- and most of the streets they stood on- exist any longer, it's notable that even in 1897 Newburgh had a sense of caring about its history especially through its buildings. The preservation movement didn't take hold nationally until the 1970's, while Newburgh always exhibited a sense of the importance of preservation starting in 1850 with Washington's Headquarters.
