Postcard #14: Calvary Church, Frederick Clarke Withers

The Calvary Presbyterian Church (photograph by Michael Gabor) designed by Frederick Clarke Withers. He was invited to the United States from England by Andrew Jackson Downing to join Downing and Vaux's growing design practice in Newburgh. Withers designed several houses but was known for his many churches rooted in the Greek Revival tradition. He was so intimately involved in the design and building of this church that he picked out the stones himself based on the way the sun hit the structure.
